Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) 1 is the first aircraft carrier designed and built in India. This 19,500 tonne warship is named as INS Vikrant after IndiaÂ’s first aircraft carrier, which was decommissioned in 1997. Once operationalised, it will boost IndiaÂ’s naval capabilities and conduct air domination operations.
The aircraft carrier was designed by Indian NavyÂ’s Directorate of Naval Design and was built at Cochin Shipyard Limited. Over 76 per cent of the materials and equipment on board this vessel were brought forth by domestic manufacturers. It is similar to the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, which is capable of carrying up to 34 aircraft, including both fighter jets and helicopters.
