Arpita Patra, professor in the Department of Computer Science and Automation at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), has summited Nevado Ojos del Salado in Chile. At 6,893 metres, it is the world’s highest volcanic peak and the highest mountain in Chile. The climb, completed on 6 March, made her the second Indian woman to reach the summit.
About Nevado Ojos del Salado
Nevado Ojos del Salado lies in the Atacama Desert on the Chile-Argentina border region. It is an active stratovolcano and one of the most prominent peaks in the Andes. Its extreme altitude, dry climate and cold winds make it one of the toughest high-altitude climbs in the world.
Significance of the Achievement
This ascent marked a major milestone in Patra’s mountaineering journey. She became the second Indian woman to summit the peak. The achievement also added to India’s presence in high-altitude mountaineering, especially among women climbers.
Previous Mountain Climbs
Patra has earlier climbed the highest volcanic peaks of four continents. These include:
- Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa.
- Mount Elbrus in Europe.
- Mount Giluwe in Oceania.
- Pico de Orizaba in North America.
She has now climbed the highest volcanic peaks of five continents.
Academic and Mountaineering Balance
Patra is a full professor at IISc and has balanced academic research with high-altitude expeditions. She described the climb as physically demanding, with severe cold, long ascent routes and a technical rock-climbing section near the summit. She has credited mountaineer Satyarup Siddhanta for guidance during her journey.
