India-Netherlands Hydrogen Fellowship Launched

India-Netherlands Hydrogen Fellowship Launched

India has strengthened scientific cooperation with the Netherlands in clean energy through the launch of the India–Netherlands Hydrogen Fellowship Programme and the signing of a Memorandum of About between the University of Groningen and 19 Indian Institutes of Technology. The initiatives aim to build academic and research capacity in green energy and hydrogen technologies, with a focus on deployment-oriented innovation.

Fellowship Programme Launch

The India–Netherlands Hydrogen Fellowship Programme is a national capacity-building initiative under the Department of Science and Technology. It is open to eligible Indian doctoral researchers, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty members across institutions. The scheme guidelines and call for proposals have been released to support advanced research exposure in hydrogen ecosystems in the Netherlands.

Key Research Focus Areas

The fellowship is designed to strengthen India’s readiness in hydrogen deployment. Priority areas include:

  • System integration of hydrogen technologies.
  • Safety and operational standards.
  • Techno-economic analysis.
  • Life-cycle assessment.
  • Indigenisation pathways for hydrogen systems.

The programme seeks to ensure that research outcomes support India’s clean energy transition and hard-to-abate sectors.

MoU with 19 IITs

The University of Groningen and 19 IITs have signed an institution-to-institution MoU to create a long-term framework for cooperation in hydrogen and green energy research. The agreement will facilitate faculty and student exchange, joint research, and knowledge sharing. It does not create automatic financial commitments.

Strategic Significance

The collaboration aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, Energy Independence 2047, and Net-Zero 2070 goals. It also reflects growing Indo-Dutch cooperation in energy transition and human capital development for the global hydrogen economy.
