India Pledges 10 Million USD for Ebola Response Africa

On 17 June 2026 India announced a USD 10 million package for Ebola preparedness, response and recovery in Africa during a Virtual Summit of African Heads of State and Government organised by the African Union.

The Pledge and Deliverables

  • Amount: USD 10 million announced 17 June 2026.
  • Immediate consignment: 45 tonnes of medical supplies delivered to affected regions including protective gear, diagnostic/monitoring devices, sample transport kits, infection‑prevention supplies, medicines and supplements.
  • Further assistance: Medical and laboratory supplies, diagnostic materials, essential medicines, nutritional support and capacity‑building to be provided based on Africa CDC and affected countries’ requirements.

Epidemiology — Bundibugyo strain

  • Virus: Bundibugyo ebolavirus; no approved vaccines or specific treatments as of June 2026.
  • Burden (17 June 2026): Democratic Republic of the Congo — 837 confirmed cases and 196 deaths across three provinces; outbreak also affecting Uganda.

  • Coordination: Assistance aligned with Africa CDC and national public health authorities.
  • Vaccine R&D: CEPI announced fast‑tracking of three investigational Bundibugyo vaccine candidates (1 June 2026); an Oxford candidate to be manufactured at the Serum Institute of India.
