Indian Passport Rises to 80th in Henley Index

Indian passport ranking has improved in the latest Henley Passport Index, moving up five places to the 80th position. Indian passport holders can now access 55 destinations either visa-free or with visa-on-arrival. The index measures global travel freedom based on the number of destinations a passport can access without obtaining a prior visa.

India’s Latest Position

India is now ranked 80th, sharing the position with Niger and Algeria. The improvement reflects a modest rise in travel mobility for Indian citizens. Recently, India had ranked 85th on the world’s strongest passports list, with access to 57 destinations through visa-free or e-visa arrangements. In 2024, it had stood at the 80th spot.

Global Passport Rankings

The 2026 index places Asian passports at the top. Singapore ranks first, with visa-free access to 192 destinations. Japan and South Korea are tied for second place, each offering access to 188 destinations. Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain and Luxembourg share third place with access to 186 destinations. The United States has returned to the 10th position after falling out of the top 10 last year.

Methodology of the Index

The Henley Passport Index evaluates 199 passports across 227 destinations. It uses data from the International Air Transport Association to assess how many countries a passport holder can enter without a prior visa. The ranking is widely used to compare global mobility and diplomatic access.

Other Key Movements

The United Arab Emirates has recorded one of the strongest long-term gains in the index. It has climbed five places this year to reach fifth position and has added visa-free access to 149 destinations since 2006. At the lower end, Afghanistan remains last at 101st place with access to 24 destinations. Pakistan is ranked 98th.
