Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978

The Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978 is a preventive detention legislation that was initially passed by the then state government of Jammu and Kashmir to curb timber smuggling. This law seeks to detain individuals to prevent them from acting against the “security of the state or maintenance of the public order”. It is one of the few state laws to be retained under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
