What is Koklass pheasant?
The Koklass pheasant (Pucrasia macrolopha) is a species distantly related to pheasants. It is the only species under genus Pucrasia. These birds are one of the few galliforms to fly uphill and with the capacity to undertake sustained flights for long durations. While they are largely herbivores, they consume large amounts of insects during the warmer season when they nest and rear chicks.
A Gurugram-based wildlife photographer had caught the first photographic evidence of Pucrasia macrolopha meyeri – a rare subspecies of Koklass pheasant – in Walong, Arunachal Pradesh last year. Flitting glimpses of this bird was caught by few witnesses in April-May 2015 and later in January 2021.
