Launch of Operation Dronagiri in India

Operation Dronagiri is a new initiative aimed at leveraging geospatial technologies to enhance the quality of life for citizens in India. Launched on 13 November 2024 by Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, this pilot project aligns with the National Geospatial Policy 2022. It demonstrates the government’s commitment to liberalising geospatial data and developing the necessary infrastructure and skills.

Objectives of Operation Dronagiri

The primary objective is to showcase the applications of geospatial data in three key sectors – Agriculture, Livelihoods, and Logistics and Transport. The initiative will initially be implemented in five states – Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. By partnering with government departments, industry leaders, and startups, the project aims to create a robust foundation for a nationwide rollout.

Integrated Geospatial Data Sharing Interface (GDI)

The GDI is a critical component of Operation Dronagiri. It facilitates seamless sharing and analysis of spatial data. This interface will support various applications such as urban planning, environmental monitoring, and disaster management. It employs advanced data exchange protocols while ensuring privacy. The GDI empowers organisations to make informed decisions that benefit the public.

Role of Private Sector and Startups

The success of Operation Dronagiri heavily relies on the engagement of the private sector and startups. Their involvement is crucial for making geospatial data accessible and impactful. The initiative aims to transform data into actionable solutions that yield socioeconomic benefits. A Grand Challenge has been announced to support startups in developing Proofs of Concept (POCs) that solve specific problems in the targeted sectors.

Implementation and Oversight

The operation will be overseen by the IIT Tirupati Navavishkar I-Hub Foundation. Geospatial Innovation Accelerators at various IITs and IIMs will serve as operational arms. The implementation process will be managed by the Geospatial Innovation Cell within the Department of Science and Technology. This structured approach ensures effective execution and maximises the potential of geospatial innovations.

Future Vision

A nationwide rollout of Operation Dronagiri is envisioned under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This model is inspired by the successful deployment of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The initiative aims to position India as a global leader in geospatial technology, encouraging innovation and responsible use of data to address pressing societal challenges.
