Lokpal Day 2026 Observed in New Delhi

Lokpal Day 2026 Observed in New Delhi

The Foundation Day of the Lokpal of India was observed on 16 January, marking the coming into force of Section 3 of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, on 16 January 2014. The event was held at the Lokpal office in New Delhi with the Chairperson and Members present. The occasion brought into light the institution’s role in promoting integrity, accountability, and transparency in public life.

Significance of Lokpal Day

Lokpal Day commemorates the establishment of India’s anti-corruption ombudsman. The institution was created in response to a long-standing public demand for an independent mechanism to inquire into allegations of corruption against public functionaries, including those at the highest levels. It is designed to function as a body that upholds public trust and the rule of law.

Institutional Role and Public Trust

The Lokpal is mandated to inquire into and investigate complaints with fairness, objectivity, and independence. Its work is linked to clean governance and ethical administration. The growing number of complaints received over the last two years indicates rising citizen awareness and confidence in the institution. Increased sittings of Benches have also helped reduce pendency and improve disposal of complaints.

Digital Infrastructure and Observance

A newly built IT infrastructure and Data Centre was inaugurated during the programme. The facility is intended to support end-to-end digital and paperless complaint processing, improve efficiency, and strengthen confidentiality. The event also included felicitation of winners of anti-corruption competitions, long-serving staff members, and children of officers and staff who excelled in academics, sports, music, dance, art, or literature.
