Namo Laxmi Scheme for Girls in Gujarat

Namo Laxmi Scheme for Girls in Gujarat

Gujarat has announced major financial support under the Namo Laxmi Scheme for girls studying in secondary and higher secondary classes. The scheme will provide assistance of Rs 1,250 crore in the 2025-26 academic year to more than 12 lakh students. It is designed to reduce financial barriers after primary schooling and encourage girls to continue education up to Class 12.

Scheme Coverage and Eligibility

The scheme applies to girls studying in schools recognised by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board or the Central Board of Secondary Education. It also covers students who are already receiving other government scholarships, as the support is additional. Eligible students must have completed Classes 1 to 8 in government schools, aided schools, or under the Right to Education framework, or Class 8 in a private primary school. The family income limit is Rs 6 lakh per year.

Financial Assistance Structure

Under the scheme, girls in Classes 9 to 12 will receive a total of Rs 50,000 over four years.

  • Classes 9 and 10 – Rs 20,000 in total.
  • Annual support – Rs 5,000, paid as Rs 500 per month for 10 months.
  • Additional amount – Rs 10,000 after passing the Class 10 board examination.
  • Classes 11 and 12 – Rs 30,000 in total.
  • Annual support – Rs 7,500, paid as Rs 750 per month for 10 months each year.
  • Additional amount – Rs 15,000 after passing the Class 12 board examination.

Education, Nutrition and Empowerment

The scheme is intended to support girls’ education, improve retention in secondary schooling, and strengthen adolescent nutrition and health. The monthly assistance is meant to help families meet schooling-related expenses and ensure better nourishment for students during their academic years.

Policy Context in Gujarat

The initiative continues Gujarat’s focus on girl education and school enrolment. Earlier programmes such as Shala Praveshotsav and other education campaigns in the state have been associated with wider efforts to improve access, retention, and social empowerment through schooling.
