National Junior Athletics Competition Begins in Tumkur

The three-day National Junior (U20) Athletics Competition begins at Mahatma Gandhi Stadium in Tumkur, Karnataka, with 1,059 athletes in action, including 709 male track and field competitors. The meet is an important selection event for next month’s Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong. The Athletics Federation of India has already announced the qualification standards for the continental event, making the competition crucial for young athletes seeking national selection.

Selection Event for Asian U20 Championships

The Tumkur meet serves as a qualifying platform for the Asian U20 Athletics Championships. Performances here will help determine which junior athletes can secure a place in the Indian team. The competition is therefore not only for medals, but also for national representation.

Key Track Events on Opening Day

The first medal events on Friday will be the 5,000m races in both the men’s and women’s sections. The opening day will also feature the men’s and women’s 100m finals, along with medals in women’s pole vault and discus throw. The men’s 100m has attracted 79 entries, while 93 athletes are entered in the men’s 200m. The men’s 400m has 89 competitors. The women’s 100m has 37 entries.

Promising Athletes to Watch

Jharkhand sprinter Parth Singh will be among the athletes to watch in the men’s 100m. He will face competition from Odisha’s Partik Maharana. Odisha’s Bapi Hansda is set to return after injury, following a long break since the 2025 National Games in Uttarakhand. Kerala’s Mohammed Ashfaq, a rising quarter-miler, is also in the field and will aim to strengthen his case for Asian U20 selection.

Significance for Junior Athletics

The meet provides a major stage for emerging Indian athletes to test themselves against strong national competition. For many participants, a top finish could mean selection for the Indian jersey at the Asian U20 level and a step forward in their international careers.
