The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is set to launch the upgraded Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) App 2.0 to strengthen monitoring, reporting and coordination under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR). The digital platform is designed to improve transparency, accountability and real-time governance in India’s anti-drug outreach programme.
Background of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan
Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan was launched on 15 August 2020 in 272 identified vulnerable districts. It was later extended to all districts of the country from 15 August 2023. The campaign aims to spread awareness about substance use and build community participation in prevention efforts. Through field activities, the mission has sensitised more than 26 crore people. This includes over 9.5 crore youth, 6.47 crore women and more than 28,000 master volunteers. The outreach has been carried out through over 8.3 lakh activities across educational institutions and other platforms.
Features of NMBA App 2.0
The upgraded app will function as a centralised digital tool for States, districts and other stakeholders. It will support real-time reporting and coordination at national, state, district and institutional levels. Key new features include:
- Citizen access for e-Pledge, IEC material, helpline support and de-addiction centre details.
- Dedicated access for Grant-in-Aid institutions with role-based reporting.
- Real-time status of grants for GIA institutions.
- Nearest de-addiction centre search facility.
- Public feedback mechanism for service improvement.
Monitoring and Service Delivery
The app will help track activities through a consolidated dashboard with near real-time visibility. It also provides Information, Education and Communication material and communication support for Nasha Mukti Mitras. Institutions can use it to organise pledge-taking activities and manage master volunteers. The platform also includes access to de-addiction helpline and MANAS helpline numbers, along with basic technical assistance contacts. This makes it a support tool for awareness, referral and service linkage.
Significance for Public Health Governance
NMBA App 2.0 reflects the government’s focus on digital governance in drug demand reduction. It aims to improve fund tracking, strengthen institutional accountability and expand public access to prevention and treatment services. The app is also expected to support evidence-based implementation of anti-drug interventions across the country.
