Odisha is set to develop its first smart village in Kusunpur, a village in Rajnagar block of Kendrapada district. The project covers around 130 families and a population of nearly 700. It is being taken up as a mission-mode initiative to promote technology-driven, sustainable and resilient rural development. The plan aligns with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat@2047 and aims to bring practical scientific solutions to village life through collaboration between research institutions, local administration and implementation partners.
Mission-Mode Rural Development Project
The initiative has been launched by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research under the Ministry of Science and Technology. It seeks to create a model village that can demonstrate how indigenous technologies can improve daily life, agriculture and basic services. The project also focuses on self-reliance, climate resilience and better rural infrastructure.
Technology Solutions for Village Needs
Several CSIR laboratories are expected to contribute to the project. Planned interventions include:
- Scientific solutions for household paddy storage.
- Climate-resilient school and anganwadi buildings.
- Improved village planning and community toilets.
- Renewable energy, clean cooking fuel and safe drinking water systems.
- Solar sharing agrivoltaics for agriculture and energy use.
Infrastructure and Disaster Resilience
The project includes support for stronger village infrastructure. CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre will help develop a multipurpose cyclone shelter. This is for coastal Odisha, where villages face recurring risks from cyclones and extreme weather. The initiative also aims to improve local preparedness and long-term safety.
Livelihood and Skill Development Focus
The project is not limited to infrastructure. It also includes livelihood support and skill-building measures. CSIR-CLRI will provide training in leather products, including items made from fish and chicken feet leather. It will also support Odisha’s ethnic textiles. This is expected to create local employment and strengthen rural income sources.
