Pest Management based on AI
In recent news, Professor Jayashankar from the Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) has signed a MoU (memorandum of understanding) with Wadhwani Institute of Artificial Learning, an institute based in Mumbai to provide pest management systems to farmers which is based on Artificial Intelligence.
Objective of signing this memorandum
This memorandum has been signed so that early information can be provided to farmers regarding pink bollworm infestation that can occur in cotton field. This advance information given to farmers can help them to take necessary precautionary measures.
Workings of this system
The Wadhwani Institute has developed an AI-based pest or insect management system which will help in early identifying of the possibility of insects, pest infestations or pink bollworm in the cotton field. This information will then be shared to farmers in those areas who have been identified for this programme. This advance information will help farmers to take necessary precautionary measures and thus can save their crops.
The AI based pest control system will be implemented in certain districts of Telangana. The districts are Karimnagar, Khammam, Nagarkurnool, Adilabad, Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda. These districts have been selected for the implementation of this system as these districts produced 20.88 lakh acres out of 60.54 lakh acres of Cotton cultivated in the entire state of Telangana.
This project is a joint collaboration of the Wadhwani Institute, the Agriculture Department, Krishi Vignan Kendras of the agriculture university and Information Technology department.
