Project Chetak Marks 47th Raising Day

Project Chetak of the Border Roads Organisation marked its 47th Raising Day at Bikaner, Rajasthan, on 4 April 2026. Raised in 1980, the project has been central to road construction and maintenance in the western border sector. It supports military mobility, border connectivity and regional development across Rajasthan, Punjab and northern Gujarat.

About Project Chetak

Project Chetak is one of the largest BRO projects by geographical spread. It operates in strategically sensitive areas close to the International Border. Its work includes building, upgrading and maintaining roads that link remote border locations with major routes and defence installations.

Infrastructure Coverage

The project manages more than 4,000 km of road network. It also maintains 214 km of Ditch Cum Bund, which is used for border protection and terrain management. Continuous efforts are under way to upgrade important feeder roads to National Highway double-lane standards.

Strategic Importance

Project Chetak plays a key role in national security by ensuring all-weather connectivity for the Defence Forces. Better roads improve troop movement, logistics support and emergency access in border areas. The project also contributes to economic activity by improving access for local communities in remote regions.

Motto and Legacy

The motto of the project is Chetak ka Prayas, Desh ka Vikas. It reflects the link between infrastructure development and national progress. Over four decades, Project Chetak has remained an important part of the BRO’s western sector operations.
