Mizoram has announced direct procurement of ginger and dry broomsticks from farmers under its flagship Bana Kaih handholding scheme from 2 February. The move is aimed at providing assured income to cultivators through support prices and strengthening the state’s rural economy. The announcement came during the inauguration of a ginger processing unit at Sairang near Aizawl.
Ginger and Broomstick Procurement
Under the Bana Kaih programme, the state government will buy ginger and dry broomsticks directly from farmers. The scheme is designed to reduce market uncertainty and improve price realisation for producers. It is part of the Zoram People’s Movement government’s wider commitment to farmer support and crop procurement.
Mizoram as Ginger Capital
Mizoram has recently been recognised by NITI Aayog as the ginger capital of India. The state government said ginger cultivation has improved the livelihoods of many farming families by raising income and purchasing power. The recognition has also brought into light the role of farmers in expanding the state’s agricultural identity beyond traditional crops.
Support Price and Procurement Data
Since the launch of Bana Kaih in September 2024, the state has procured ginger, turmeric, chilli, broomsticks and unhusked rice from farmers. Officials said around Rs 137.72 crore was spent last year as support price for ginger procurement alone. During the same period, 48,602.29 quintals of dried broomsticks worth nearly Rs 2 crore and 1,473 quintals of unhusked rice valued at Rs 44.18 lakh were also procured.
Crop Diversification Plans
The chief minister also brought into light the potential of sapthei fruit cultivation in Mizoram. The government plans to promote it on a larger scale to diversify farm income and further strengthen the rural economy. The initiative reflects a broader push towards value addition, crop diversification and market-linked agricultural support.
