The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research is expanding its Integrated Skill Initiative to strengthen India’s skilled workforce through science-based training. The programme links research institutions, industry needs and employable skills, and supports the national goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Skill India. It uses CSIR’s laboratory network and scientific expertise to deliver practical training for diverse groups.
Objective of the Initiative
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and market demand. It focuses on skill development in areas where industry, society and entrepreneurship require trained manpower. The programme is designed to improve employability, support self-employment and encourage career growth through practical learning.
Beneficiaries and Training Model
The initiative provides access to a wide range of participants, including:
- Students and young researchers.
- Technical staff and working professionals.
- School dropouts and ITI diploma holders.
- Farmers and rural communities.
It offers short-term and long-term modules, internships, certification courses and laboratory-based exposure. The training covers both theoretical and hands-on learning, with emphasis on advanced and emerging technologies.
Sectoral Coverage and Performance
The programme covers 18 of the 36 key sectoral skills identified under the National Skill Development Mission. These include aerospace and aviation, agriculture, automotive, construction, electronics, food processing, green jobs, healthcare, life sciences, textiles, and IT and ITeS. More than 1.90 lakh people have been trained through over 5,200 programmes across Phase I and Phase II, including focused efforts for rural citizens and women.
Third Phase and Institutional Support
The third phase was launched in June 2025 with renewed focus on advanced skilling and stronger academia-industry linkages. In its first year, over 14,000 participants were trained through more than 425 programmes across 37 CSIR laboratories. The CSIR-Human Resource Development Centre in Ghaziabad serves as the nodal office for monitoring, coordination and evaluation of the initiative.
