RuPaul fly
RuPaul fly (Opaluma rupaul) is the soldier fly named by the CSIRO entomologist Bryan Lessard after the American drag queen RuPaul. The solider fly belongs to the new genus Opaluma, which is derived from Latin words for opal and throne. It has a unique thorn tucked under its abdomen.
Naming vulnerable species after pop culture icons has significantly increased public attention towards the climate vulnerability and conservation efforts. The first insect Bryan Lessard named after a pop culture icon was Beyonce fly (Scaptia beyonceae). It was named a decade ago in 2011.
