Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge

The Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge was launched last year by the Central Government on the occasion of the World Toilet Day (November 19) to prevent “hazardous cleaning” of sewers or septic tanks unless it is vitally required in the interest of public hygiene. It aims to empower sewer and septic tank cleaners, who face safety concerns on a daily basis.
Recently, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs launched the field assessments for the Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge. The challenge focuses on creating public awareness about the issue of manual scavenging and promoting infrastructure required for mechanized cleaning and capacity building of the workforce.
