Himachal Pradesh has reviewed progress on the 450 MW Shongtong-Karcham Hydroelectric Project on the Satluj River in Kinnaur district. The project is one of the state’s major clean energy initiatives and is expected to add power generation capacity once completed. Around 75 per cent of the work has been finished, with civil and electro-mechanical works moving in phases.
Project Overview
The Shongtong-Karcham project is being developed on the Satluj River. It includes key components such as the barrage, head race tunnel, surge shaft and powerhouse. These structures are central to the project’s hydropower generation system. The project is designed to support Himachal Pradesh’s energy needs and improve grid stability.
Progress and Timeline
The state government has directed the department to speed up construction. The first phase is targeted for completion by January 2027. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of the current financial year. Officials said construction is being monitored closely, and technical measures are being used to address site-specific challenges.
Energy and Economic Impact
Once operational, the project is expected to generate about 1,579 million units of electricity annually. This will strengthen the state’s power portfolio and support energy self-reliance. The project is also projected to contribute nearly Rs. 900 crore annually to the Himachal Pradesh economy. It is being seen as an important step towards sustainable development and cleaner energy infrastructure in the hill state.
Administrative Review and Site Inspection
During the visit, the Chief Minister inspected the powerhouse, surge shaft and barrage areas. He also interacted with engineers and workers at the site. Senior officials from the state administration and Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited were present during the review.
