Standard Developing Organization

A Standard Developing Organization (SDO) is a recognition given by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the BIS SDO Recognition Scheme, which seeks to achieve the Indian Government’s vision of “One Nation, One Standard”. The objective of this initiative is to amass and integrate the existing capabilities and expertise to converge all standard development activities in India to ensure “One National Standard for One Subject”.

The Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) under the Railways Ministry recently became first to receive the SDO recognition from the BIS. Based in Lucknow, RDSO is the only research and development wing of the Railways Ministry, in charge of formulating standards for the Railways sector.
