Surya Devbhoomi Challenge 2.0 Flagged Off

The Chief of Defence Staff flagged off the Surya Devbhoomi Challenge 2.0 in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The expedition began from Badrinath and is organised by the Indian Army. It covers 113 kilometres across three sacred shrines of the Himalayas, namely Kalpeshwar, Rudranath and Tungnath. The initiative links adventure sports with heritage conservation, tourism promotion and regional development.

Expedition Route and Purpose

The challenge is designed as a high-altitude adventure expedition in the Himalayan terrain. It passes through important religious and cultural locations in Garhwal. The route marks the region’s spiritual significance and natural landscape. The event also aims to encourage responsible tourism in border areas.

Link with Vibrant Village Programme

The initiative is aligned with the Vibrant Village Programme. This programme focuses on improving livelihoods and strengthening development in border villages. The expedition is expected to support local employment, tourism services and community participation. It also reflects efforts to connect national security with grassroots development.

Heritage and Cultural Promotion

During the visit, the Harsil Cultural and Heritage Centre was laid with the aim of preserving Garhwal’s cultural identity. The centre is intended to showcase the history, traditions and heritage of the region. It is also expected to promote tourism in Uttarkashi district and nearby areas. Such institutions can support local awareness and cultural preservation.

Visit to Badrinath and Harsil

The CDS also offered prayers at Shri Badrinath Dham and reviewed arrangements for pilgrims. He later visited Harsil and interacted with residents of Vibrant Villages. The engagement brought into light the role of local communities in border area development and nation-building.
