The 'Dhanu Yatra' Festival: A Unique Celebration of Good over Evil
The 'Dhanu Yatra' festival, known as the world's largest open-air theatre, began on December 27th in the town of Bargarh, located in the eastern state of Odisha in India. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi both offered their greetings to the people of Odisha on the start of the 11-day festival. This annual celebration marks the victory of good over evil and has its roots in the celebration of India's Independence in 1947-48.
History of the 'Dhanu Yatra' Festival
The 'Dhanu Yatra' festival is steeped in the culture of Odisha and has a rich history dating back to the 1940s. It tells the story of Bhagawan Shri Krishna through folk art forms, beginning with the dethroning of Emperor Ugrasen of Mathura by the demon king Kansa and ending with the death of Kansa and restoration of the throne to Ugrasen. The festival takes place over the course of 11 days, with the events being enacted in 14 different locations across the area.
During the festival, Bargarh becomes the town of Mathura and Amapali, located about 8 km away, becomes Gopapura, where Lord Krishna is said to have spent his childhood. The Jeera river, which flows between the two towns, is transformed into the Yamuna river for the duration of the festival.

- The 'Dhanu Yatra' festival is a unique and immersive experience, with politicians and government officials often getting drawn into the show as the demon king Kansa holds sway during the festival.
- In this role, Kansa penalizes offenders on the streets, enters government offices to discipline officials, and even holds a 'durbar' where he listens to the grievances of the people and passes orders to government officials.
- This year, the festival will feature performances by over 3,500 artistes from 155 cultural troupes from across India and abroad at the Rajdurbar and Rangamahal.
- The festival, which was not held for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will conclude on January 6th.
