What is Performance Grading Index?

The Performance Grading Index (PGI) was unveiled by the Indian Government in 2019 to promote competitiveness among states and union territories for encouraging multi-pronged government interventions that will bring about the much-needed growth in the country’s education quality. It uses 70 parameters to identify gaps and priority areas for the required interventions.

The Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal “Nishank” had recently released the PGI 2019-20. According to this index, Punjab, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Kerala occupy the highest grade for 2019-20. Most of the states and UTs have improved their grades when compared with previous studies.
