World Lion Day

August 10 is observed as the World Lion Day to raise awareness about the importance of lion conservation. The lion is an endangered species on the IUCN Red List. The awareness day was created by a group of non-profits and tourism companies to bring about the global awareness about the importance of conserving lion population and habitats. Organisations Panthera and National Geographic SocietyÂ’s Big Cats Initiative back this day.
The main purpose of observing the World Lion Day is to protect the big catsÂ’ shrinking habitats. There has been an 80 per cent drop in the lion population over the past 100 years. The lionsÂ’ survival is paramount for the maintenance of ecological balance.
