NSO Releases ASUSE User Guide

NSO Releases ASUSE User Guide

The National Statistics Office has released its first dedicated user guide for the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE). The publication, titled Know Your Survey – A User Guide to the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises, is designed to help data users understand the survey’s concepts, coverage, methods and quality framework in a simple and structured manner. It is aimed at improving the informed use of ASUSE data for policymaking, research and public discussion.

What ASUSE Covers

ASUSE is a key official data source on the unincorporated non-agricultural sector in India. This sector is important because it supports employment, livelihoods and economic output. It also acts as a link in domestic value chains that support the incorporated sector. Given its scale and diversity, accurate interpretation of ASUSE data requires clear knowledge of the survey design and methodology.

Purpose of the User Guide

The new guide explains the full survey process in a user-friendly format. It covers:

  • Survey concepts and definitions.
  • Data collection and field procedures.
  • Processing, validation and estimation methods.
  • Quality assurance practices used in the survey.

The document is intended to improve transparency and make official statistics easier to use for ministries, state departments, researchers, academicians, industry stakeholders and the general public.

Focus on Communication and Trust

The publication reflects a broader effort to strengthen communication between the statistical system and its users. It follows international best practices in explaining survey design, outputs and limitations. A separate section has been included for respondents, addressing common questions and concerns related to field investigation, confidentiality and cooperation during data collection.

Significance for Official Statistics

By releasing this guide, the NSO aims to build a more informed data user community and improve trust in official statistics. The initiative is also expected to support better stakeholder engagement and more meaningful use of ASUSE results in economic analysis and policy formulation.
