The second phase of the Specialised Training Programme in Cancer Care for BIMSTEC countries has been launched at the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Visakhapatnam. The initiative is designed to strengthen oncology capacity in the Bay of Bengal region through skill development, clinical training and regional cooperation. It is part of India’s wider effort to support equitable access to quality cancer care among BIMSTEC member states.
Launch and Institutional Support
The programme was formally launched by the Ministry of External Affairs Joint Secretary for BIMSTEC and SAARC, C.S.R. Ram. It is being implemented by the Tata Memorial Centre with support from the Ministry of External Affairs. The initiative was announced by the Prime Minister of India at the 6th BIMSTEC Summit.
Regional Participation
Participants in the programme come from BIMSTEC countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Nepal. The training is intended to build professional skills among cancer-care personnel and improve the quality of services available in the region. The first edition, held in July-August 2025, trained 21 cancer-care professionals from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and Nepal.
Focus on Cancer Burden and Capacity Building
The programme responds to the rising burden of cancer and the uneven availability of advanced treatment across the region. It aims to promote better diagnosis, treatment and patient care through structured training. It also supports knowledge-sharing and research collaboration among participating countries.
Significance for BIMSTEC Cooperation
The initiative reflects India’s emphasis on health diplomacy and regional partnership within BIMSTEC. It is expected to contribute to stronger oncology systems, improved professional networks and more accessible cancer care across member countries. The launch also underlines the role of Indian medical institutions in regional capacity building.
