Uttar Pradesh has decided to set up state-of-the-art digital libraries in Gram Panchayat Secretariats across all districts. The initiative aims to improve access to books, digital learning tools and exam preparation material for rural students. Procurement of IT equipment is to be completed by 30 January, while furniture procurement is targeted for 26 January. After this, the libraries are expected to become operational.
Project Objective
The digital libraries are being created to support students in villages with quality educational resources. They will allow learners to study without leaving their local areas. The programme is also intended to strengthen digital access at the panchayat level.
Facilities to be Provided
Each library will be equipped with:
- Wi-Fi connectivity for internet access.
- LED screens for digital learning content.
- CCTV cameras for security.
- Computer systems for study and access to resources.
- Books, e-books, video lectures, audio lectures and quizzes.
Funding and Infrastructure
Around Rs 4 lakh will be spent on each digital library. This includes Rs 2 lakh for books, Rs 1.30 lakh for IT equipment and Rs 70,000 for modern furniture. The libraries are being established in Gram Panchayats in every district of the state. The model combines physical reading material with digital educational content.
Significance for Rural Education
The initiative is important for improving digital literacy and learning opportunities in rural Uttar Pradesh. It may help students prepare for competitive examinations through structured content and online tools. The project also reflects the growing role of Gram Panchayat Secretariats as local centres for public services and knowledge access.
