SAI has launched a four-day Sports Sciences Workshop for combat sports coaches at its Sports Science Division in New Delhi. The programme is aimed at strengthening the use of sports science in daily coaching for Boxing, Wrestling and Judo. It combines practical training with scientific methods to improve elite performance, reduce injuries and support long-term athlete development.
Focus on Combat Sports Coaching
The workshop is designed for SAI coaches working in key combat disciplines. It emphasises coach-led training supported by sports scientists. The main objective is to make coaching more evidence-based and athlete-centric.
- Functional strength training is being taught for combat athletes.
- Plyometrics and periodised resistance training are included.
- Exercise physiology principles are being linked to performance needs.
Injury Prevention and Recovery
A major part of the workshop covers prevention and management of common combat-sport injuries. Special attention is being given to shoulder-related conditions, which are frequent in contact sports.
- Evidence-based warm-up protocols are being brought into light.
- Strength and stability training are being used for injury reduction.
- Scientific load management is being stressed to avoid overtraining.
Holistic Athlete Support
The workshop also includes modules on sports nutrition, recovery science, anti-doping awareness and applied sports psychology. These areas are considered essential for sustained performance and career longevity. The inaugural session was addressed by the Director of the Sports Injury Centre at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. The session underlined the need for coordination between sports science, sports medicine and injury management. Such integration is expected to improve treatment pathways and help athletes return safely to training and competition.
SAI-SIC Collaboration and MoU
SAI and the Sports Injury Centre are set to sign a Memorandum of About after in-principle approval from the Union Sports Minister. Under the proposed framework, SIC will manage advanced sports medicine and surgical care, while SAI will handle applied sports science rehabilitation and return-to-play protocols. The arrangement aims to ensure priority treatment, safer recovery and better medal prospects for Indian athletes.
