Gujarat has launched a mobile cancer screening unit, named Asha Van, in Gandhinagar to support early detection and diagnosis of cancer. The van is equipped with advanced diagnostic tools, including EVA-Pro technology, a mammography unit and teleconsultation facilities. It is designed to screen people at different locations, with a special focus on rural areas and primary healthcare access.
Mobile Cancer Screening Initiative
The Asha Van is intended to improve early detection of life-threatening diseases. It can screen for 10 types of cancer, including lung, oral, blood, cervical, pancreatic, liver, breast and prostate cancers. The initiative aims to make cancer screening more accessible through a mobile healthcare model.
Equipment and Medical Support
The van includes ultra-modern diagnostic equipment for on-the-spot screening. It also provides expert teleconsultation support, which can help in preliminary assessment and referral. The presence of a mammography unit strengthens its capacity for breast cancer detection.
Public Health and Rural Outreach
The mobile unit is expected to support the broader goal of health and wellness for all. It is particularly relevant for rural and underserved areas, where access to specialised cancer screening is limited. Early diagnosis can improve treatment outcomes and reduce mortality.
Institutional Handover and Use
The cancer screening van has been handed over to the Bhavnagar branch of the Indian Red Cross Society for public service. The initiative reflects growing use of mobile medical units in preventive healthcare and community-level disease detection.
