Amrit Bharat Station Scheme Review

Amrit Bharat Station Scheme Review

Station redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme has drawn fresh parliamentary scrutiny, with emphasis on passenger satisfaction, accessibility, cleanliness, safety, and post-redevelopment impact assessment. The Standing Committee on Railways has recommended periodic evaluation of upgraded stations and stronger feedback systems to ensure that modernisation delivers measurable benefits for passengers and local mobility needs.

Committee’s Key Recommendations

  • Passenger satisfaction should be assessed periodically at redeveloped stations.
  • Post-redevelopment impact studies should be carried out for upgraded stations.
  • Feedback and grievance redressal systems should be built into the redevelopment process.
  • Station plans should reflect passenger traffic, projected demand, and future city growth.

Scale of Station Redevelopment

  • The Ministry of Railways has identified 1,337 stations for redevelopment.
  • Of these, 172 stations have been completed.
  • Another 1,072 stations are under progress.
  • India has about 8,000 railway stations and halts.

Passenger Feedback and Monitoring

RailMadad remains the main grievance and feedback platform for Indian Railways. Passengers can use helpline 139, the RailMadad website, mobile app, and SMS to register complaints and share feedback. The ministry informed the committee that between 1 April 2025 and 31 January 2026, about 70% of feedback on passenger amenities at redeveloped stations was rated excellent or satisfactory. The committee also called for phased implementation, regular field inspections, and timely corrective action to strengthen monitoring.

Funding and Notable Stations

Development, upgradation, and modernisation of stations under the scheme are funded through the Customer Amenities budget. For FY26, Rs 12,120 crore was allocated under this head, and Rs 9,660 crore had been spent up to December 2025. Redeveloped stations include Ayodhya Dham, Cuttack, Porbandar, Jaisalmer, Karaikkudi Junction, Pollachi Junction, Haldia, Begumpet, Dharwad, and Godhra Junction.
