Prakriti 2026 Conference on Carbon Markets

Prakriti 2026 Conference on Carbon Markets

India’s International Conference on Carbon Markets, Prakriti 2026, began in New Delhi as a flagship event under Bharat Electricity Summit 2026. The conference focuses on carbon markets, climate finance, digital monitoring systems, and India’s pathway towards green growth. It also marked the launch of the Indian Carbon Market Portal, a central platform for implementing and administering the Indian Carbon Market.

Launch of Indian Carbon Market Portal

The Indian Carbon Market Portal was launched to support the operational framework of the Indian Carbon Market. It is designed to improve transparency, administration, and access for stakeholders involved in carbon trading and project registration. The portal is expected to strengthen the institutional structure of India’s carbon market ecosystem.

Carbon Credit Trading Scheme Framework

India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme has already notified nine methodologies and registered more than 40 entities across sectors such as biogas, hydrogen, and forestry. On the compliance side, greenhouse gas emission intensity targets have been notified for nearly 490 obligated entities across seven energy-intensive sectors. This framework aims to ensure measurable and verifiable emission reductions.

Digital MRV and Climate Finance

The conference brought into light the importance of digital MRV, or monitoring, reporting and verification, for credible carbon markets. It also stressed the need for capital mobilisation to support clean technologies such as renewable energy and green hydrogen. Collaboration under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement was identified as vital for global carbon market cooperation.

Broader Significance for India

The conference sessions cover Paris Agreement crediting, compliance systems, carbon border policies, buildings and cooling in the carbon market, farmer participation, and corporate climate action. The event reflects India’s effort to combine climate responsibility with economic development through transparent and inclusive market-based mechanisms.
