The 7th round of Foreign Office Consultations between India and Algeria was held in Algiers on 29 March. The meeting reviewed bilateral ties, trade, parliamentary cooperation, counter-terrorism, and coordination at multilateral forums. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the current state of relations and stressed the need for sustained high-level engagement.
Key Participants
The consultations were co-chaired by Dr Neena Malhotra, Secretary (South) in the Ministry of External Affairs, and Lounes Magramane, Secretary General of Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The dialogue reflected the importance both countries attach to regular diplomatic engagement.
Bilateral Cooperation
India and Algeria agreed to deepen cooperation across several areas. Algeria welcomed the formation of the India-Algeria Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Indian Parliament. Both sides also noted the steady expansion of ties in recent years and the value of institutional exchanges.
Trade and Sectoral Potential
Bilateral trade between the two countries is currently valued at around 1.7 billion dollars. The consultations identified scope for growth in:
- Pharmaceuticals
- Higher education
- Energy
- Mining
- Fertilisers
- Agriculture
These sectors were seen as important for widening economic engagement and diversifying cooperation.
Counter-Terrorism and Multilateral Coordination
Both countries condemned terrorism in all its forms and reaffirmed their commitment to jointly combat the threat. India also appreciated the warm reception given to an All-Party Parliamentary delegation visiting Algeria after the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The two sides exchanged views on regional and global developments and reiterated their commitment to close coordination at the United Nations and other multilateral platforms.
