Indian Naval Ship Trikand concluded its port call at Maputo, Mozambique, on 29 March. The visit combined naval cooperation, humanitarian outreach and maritime training. It also brought into light India’s growing engagement with African littoral states in the Indian Ocean Region.
Port Call Activities
During the visit, the guided missile frigate held professional exchanges with the Mozambique Navy. Joint exercises were conducted to improve interoperability and operational coordination. Such engagements help both navies build familiarity in procedures, communications and seamanship.
Humanitarian Outreach
India handed over humanitarian assistance and disaster relief material during the port call. The event was attended by Mozambique’s Health Minister Ussene Hilario Isse and Indian High Commissioner Robert Shetkintong. A medical camp was also organised at the Mozambique Navy Hospital, adding a community outreach dimension to the visit.
Post-Departure Naval Cooperation
After leaving Maputo, Trikand carried out joint exclusive economic zone surveillance with Mozambique Navy personnel onboard. This activity supported maritime domain awareness and training. It also reflected cooperation in monitoring and securing maritime spaces, which is important for coastal security and resource protection.
Strategic Significance
The port call forms part of India’s wider maritime diplomacy under the MAHASAGAR initiative. The initiative seeks to strengthen security, cooperation and capacity-building across the Indian Ocean Region. Naval visits, joint drills and humanitarian support are key tools in this approach.
