India’s 2038 Asian Games Bid

India submitted an Expression of Interest for the 2038 Asian Games through the Indian Olympic Association on or before 21 April 2026. The Olympic Council of Asia discussed the proposal at its executive board meeting in Sanya, China, on 21 April 2026, during the Asian Beach Games.

Asian Games And The Olympic Council Of Asia

The Asian Games are a continental multi-sport event for athletes from Asia and are governed by the Olympic Council of Asia. The Olympic Council of Asia is the regional sports body recognised for the Asian Games, the Asian Winter Games, and the Asian Beach Games.

India’s Previous Hosting Record

India hosted the Asian Games in New Delhi in 1951 and again in 1982. New Delhi was the host city for the 9th Asian Games in 1982, and the inaugural Asian Games were held in New Delhi in 1951.

Bid Process And Competing Claims

The Indian Olympic Association CEO, Raghuram Iyer, stated that the process is at an early stage and that further guidance from the Olympic Council of Asia is awaited as of 24 April 2026. Ahmedabad is being considered as the likely host city, and it is also linked with India’s bids for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympic Games.

  • South Korea has shown interest through a joint proposal from Gwangju and Daegu.
  • Mongolia has also expressed interest as of 24 April 2026.
  • The Olympic Council of Asia is expected to finalise the host city around 2028.

Multi-Sport Event Bidding In India

India has bid for major international sporting events through city-based proposals and national sports bodies. Ahmedabad has been associated with India’s recent bids for the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games.
