7th National Sub-Junior Boxing Championship Begins in Nagpur

The 7th National Sub-Junior (Under-17) Boxing Championship has begun in Nagpur, bringing together nearly 600 young boxers from across India. The week-long event was inaugurated in the presence of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. The championship is an important fixture in India’s junior boxing calendar and also acts as a talent identification platform for future international competitions.

Participation and Format

The tournament has attracted around 250 girls and 350 boys. They are supported by nearly 180 coaches and team managers, along with 70 officials. Competitions are being conducted in 13 weight categories, giving young athletes a broad competitive platform.

Selection Significance

The championship is not limited to medal contests. It is being used to shortlist promising boxers for the Indian Under-17 squad. Selected athletes will represent India at the Asian Boxing Championship later this year in Tashkent. This makes the event important for both national ranking and international preparation.

Role in Grassroots Boxing

Sub-junior championships play a key role in strengthening India’s boxing pipeline. They help identify talent at an early stage, provide exposure to competitive standards, and build a pathway from school-level sport to elite national representation. Such events also reflect the growing participation of girls in combat sports.

Event Schedule and Wider Importance

The championship will continue for a week and conclude on 11th of this month. Its scale, participation, and selection relevance underline the increasing institutional support for boxing in India. The event is expected to contribute to the development of the next generation of national boxers.
