Rajya Sabha Members Take Oath in Parliament

Rajya Sabha Members Take Oath in Parliament

Nineteen newly elected and re-elected members of the Rajya Sabha took oath in Parliament, marking their formal entry into the Upper House. The oath was administered by Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan in the House Chamber. The ceremony was held in the presence of senior officials and Union ministers. The members represent Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Odisha.

Members Sworn In From Four States

The oath-taking included members from different political parties and regions. From Maharashtra, Ramdas Athawale, Maya Chintaman Ivnate, Sharad Pawar, Ramrao Sakharam Wadkute and Jyoti Nagnath Waghmare took oath. From Tamil Nadu, the members were Christopher Manickam, Anbumani Ramadoss, Constandine Ravindran, L. K. Sudhish, M. Thambidurai and Tiruchi Siva. West Bengal was represented by Babul Supriyo, Menaka Guruswamy, Rajeev Kumar, Rukmini Mallik and Biswajit Sinha. Odisha’s members were Santrupt Mishra, Dilip Kumar Ray and Manmohan Samal.

Significance Of The Oath Ceremony

The oath is a constitutional requirement for members to assume office and participate in parliamentary proceedings. It confirms their status as MPs and enables them to take part in debates, voting and committee work. Such ceremonies are usually held when the House is in session, but this one was organised even though Parliament was not currently sitting.

Government Calls For Constructive Role

Union ministers present at the ceremony congratulated the members and urged them to contribute meaningfully to the functioning of the Rajya Sabha. The emphasis was on improving the quality of debate and strengthening parliamentary proceedings through active participation and responsible conduct.

Women’s Reservation Bill In Focus

The occasion also brought attention to the proposed Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill, which is expected to be considered in the special Parliament session from April 16. The proposed amendment to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam seeks 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures. Since it requires a two-thirds majority, support from multiple parties will be essential for passage.
