Indian Army To Host Pragati-I In Meghalaya

The Indian Army will host the inaugural multilateral military exercise PRAGATI-I at the Foreign Training Node, Umroi, in Meghalaya from 18 May to 31 May 2026. Military delegations from 11 friendly foreign countries are expected to participate in the exercise.

PRAGATI Exercise

PRAGATI stands for Partnership of Regional Armies for Growth and Transformation in the Indian Ocean Region. The exercise is designed as a multilateral military engagement among regional armies in the Indian Ocean Region.

  • The exercise is scheduled for 18 May to 31 May 2026.
  • The venue is the Foreign Training Node at Umroi near Shillong in Meghalaya.
  • The Indian Army has extended invitations to 15 ASEAN-region countries and neighbouring partners, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Objectives And Participation

The stated objectives of PRAGATI-I are defence cooperation, interoperability, and mutual trust among participating armies. Interoperability in military exercises refers to the ability of different armed forces to operate together using common procedures and compatible systems.

  • Exercise PRAGATI-I is the first edition of the multilateral exercise.
  • Eleven foreign countries are expected to take part in the inaugural edition.
  • The Indian Army hosted the final planning conference at Umroi on 26 April 2026 to finalise operational and administrative arrangements.

Industry Exposition

A two-day industry exposition is planned for 30 and 31 May 2026 at FTN Umroi, Shillong, in Meghalaya. The exposition is intended to showcase India’s defence industry capabilities and to support partnerships with ASEAN countries.

Meghalaya As A Training Location

Umroi in Meghalaya hosts the Foreign Training Node of the Indian Army. Meghalaya is a north-eastern state of India with Shillong as its capital.
