The Bengaluru City Police launched an AI-enabled multilingual capability in its 112 Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) on 29 April 2026. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara launched the system, which uses Multilingual Voice AI for Nationwide Key Interventions (VANKI).
112 Emergency Response Support System
India uses 112 as the national emergency number under the Emergency Response Support System. The ERSS integrates police, fire, ambulance, and other emergency services through a single contact number.
Multilingual Voice AI for Nationwide Key Interventions
VANKI supports more than 10 languages, including Bengali, Gujarati, Odia, Manipuri, Kashmiri, Nepali, Assamese, Spanish, French, and Arabic. The platform allows callers to speak in their preferred language and provides real-time interpretation for call handlers.
Operational Features
- The system aims to reduce language barriers for students, professionals, and visitors in Bengaluru.
- The technology was developed with Monday Ventures and Aeos.
- The police control room receives about 8,000 calls daily, and 100 to 200 calls often arrive in languages other than Kannada, English, or Hindi.
- The language coverage of the platform will expand in phases.
Emergency Communication in India
Emergency communication systems in India use call routing, location support, and dispatch coordination for police and rescue services. Multilingual support is relevant in metropolitan areas with inter-State migration and international travel.
