The 16th BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting concluded in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on 13 June 2026. Hosted under India’s presidency, the summit focused on empowering smallholder farmers and building resilient food systems. The event saw the adoption of the Indore Declaration, which formalizes four institutional frameworks to enhance South-South cooperation, technological integration, and sustainable agriculture.

Key Institutional Initiatives

  • Agroecology & Regenerative Agriculture Network: Establishes Centres of Excellence for collaborative research on natural farming. ICAR-IIFSR (Modipuram) serves as India’s central coordinating node.
  • BRICS Network on Digital Agriculture: Promotes AI, big data, and geospatial tech in farming. IIT Delhi is the nodal implementing authority.
  • Global Forum on Farmers’ Rights: Focuses on protecting traditional agrarian knowledge, seed access, and genetic resources.
  • BRICS AGRIN Framework: Facilitates resource sharing and supply chain stabilization for agricultural inputs.

  • Trade Facilitation: Promoting open agricultural commerce while opposing unilateral trade restrictions.

  • Investment: Directing capital toward rural storage and food processing.
  • BARP Upgrade: Modernizing the BRICS Agricultural Research Platform into a “Lab to Land” Knowledge-to-Action Hub.
