Expanding Glacial Lakes in Arunachal Pradesh

Expanding Glacial Lakes in Arunachal Pradesh

A satellite assessment by Suhora Technologies up to 15 June 2026 found four of five potentially dangerous glacial lakes in the Mago Chu basin, Tawang district, have expanded over the past decade; Sanhapo increased from 78.07 ha (2019) to 88.81 ha (15 June 2026).

Key observations

  • Sanhapo Lake: Grew from 78.07 hectares (2019) to 88.81 hectares (15 June 2026).
  • Dharkha Tso: Classified “high risk” by NDMA; area moved from 12.40 ha (2016) to 12.73 ha (2026), with incremental growth recorded.
  • Other very‑high‑risk lake: Rose from 20.19 ha (2016) to 21.75 ha (15 June 2026).
  • Two additional very‑high‑risk lakes: Each expanded by about one hectare over the past decade; one lake remained stable.
  • Trend: Four of five lakes show expansion consistent with glacial retreat and increased meltwater storage.

Monitoring & methods

  • Data sources: Multi‑sensor imagery from ICEYE (SAR), PlanetScope (optical) and LISS‑IV (ISRO multispectral) up to 15 June 2026.
  • Temporal scope: Decadal comparisons using 2016–2026 baselines for most lakes; Sanhapo comparison used 2019 baseline.
  • Operational note: Continuous satellite monitoring was recommended prior to the monsoon; expansion does not by itself confirm an imminent flood.

Institutional & hazard facts

  • Location: Mago Chu basin, Tawang district; study references proximity to Khangri Glacier.
  • NDMA: Uses risk categories including “very high‑risk” and “high risk” for glacial lakes.
  • National monitoring: NDMA programme monitors 189 high‑risk glacial lakes after Oct 2023 Sikkim event; Central Water Commission observes over 900 glacial lakes/water bodies via satellites.
  • GLOF (definition): Sudden discharge from a glacial lake caused by moraine or ice‑dam failure leading to downstream flooding.
