Assam has announced a set of major measures covering power generation, public employment, industrial investment and labour welfare. The initiatives were outlined during the Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly and are aimed at strengthening infrastructure, creating jobs and improving livelihoods across the state.
Kopili Hydro Electric Project
The long-pending Kopili Hydro Electric Project is expected to be completed within 10 days. Once operational, it will generate 150 megawatts of electricity. Repair and restoration work on an additional 25 MW capacity at the Kopili plant is also under way. The move is intended to improve power availability and support Assam’s energy needs.
Government Jobs Plan
The state government has announced that 55,000 government jobs will be provided within the first three years of the current tenure. Most of these appointments will be in the education department. The decision is aimed at reducing staff shortages and strengthening the public education system.
Japanese Investment in Jagiroad
A delegation of 20 Japanese companies is scheduled to visit Jagiroad on 28 February. The companies are expected to assess opportunities for industrial investment in the area. Jagiroad is being projected as a potential industrial hub, with scope for manufacturing growth and employment generation for local youth.
Tea Garden Workers’ Wages
The daily wages of tea garden workers will be increased from 1 March. The revision is meant to improve the living standards of workers in Assam’s tea sector, which remains central to the state’s economy and social structure.
