The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, marked its 25th Foundation Day at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The event brought together senior government officials, policymakers, partner institutions, and stakeholders from across the country. The celebration brought into light BEE’s role in advancing energy efficiency, supporting India’s climate goals, and strengthening sustainable development.
BEE’s Role in Energy Transition
BEE was described as a preventive institution for the power sector because every unit of electricity saved reduces the need for additional generation and cuts emissions. Energy efficiency was presented as a key pillar of India’s development strategy. It was also linked to the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 and the broader goal of balancing growth with sustainability.
Key National Achievements
India’s progress in climate and energy transition was brought into light during the event. The country has reduced the emissions intensity of GDP by 36% from 2005 levels. It has also achieved 52% non-fossil fuel installed capacity ahead of the 2030 target. Major BEE-linked initiatives discussed included:
- Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) Scheme
- Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS)
- Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE)
- Standards and Labelling (S&L) Programme
- Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code (ECSBC)
- ADEETIE scheme for MSMEs
New Digital and Consumer Initiatives
The BEE@25 logo was released to mark the milestone year. A BEE Journey Video was also screened, showcasing the Bureau’s evolution and flagship programmes. The RCO Portal was launched to improve monitoring, compliance, and coordination under energy efficiency programmes. In addition, the BEE Star Label Mobile Application was launched to help consumers scan QR codes on appliances and access verified product and energy performance details.
Way Forward for Efficiency
The event underlined the growing importance of energy efficiency in sectors such as cooling, industry, transport, data centres, and artificial intelligence. BEE’s work was presented as central to energy security, affordability, environmental protection, and India’s long-term transition towards a cleaner economy.
