Deendayal Port Prepares for Vessel Surge

Deendayal Port Prepares for Vessel Surge

Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat, is preparing to handle a sharp rise in vessel traffic over a 72-hour period from March 13 to 15. The increase comes amid disruption in the Gulf region, where the closure of the Hormuz Strait has affected global energy and shipping routes. The port is expected to manage 22 vessels during the weekend, reflecting the need to reconfigure voyages and maintain trade flows.

Port Readiness

Deendayal Port Authority has activated operational systems to manage the expected surge efficiently. The focus is on accommodating re-routed ships and ensuring smooth port services. Such preparedness is important for India’s western coast, which handles share of the country’s maritime trade.

Impact of Hormuz Strait Closure

The Hormuz Strait is a critical global shipping lane for crude oil and other energy cargoes. Its closure has disrupted maritime movement and forced several vessels to alter routes. This has increased pressure on Indian ports, especially those on the Arabian Sea coast, to absorb diverted traffic.

Mayuree Naree Incident

Among the vessels expected at Kandla is the Thai-flagged bulk carrier Mayuree Naree. The ship was attacked by two projectiles of unknown origin while transiting the Hormuz Strait and was heading towards Deendayal Port. The incident has raised concerns over maritime security and the safety of commercial shipping in the region.

India’s Maritime and Diplomatic Response

India has condemned attacks on the Mayuree Naree and on commercial vessels in general. The incident marks the vulnerability of international shipping lanes during regional conflict. It also underlines the importance of port resilience, maritime security, and contingency planning in sustaining trade continuity.
