BIMSTEC Young Professionals Exchange in Maharashtra

India hosted the BIMSTEC Young Professionals Exchange Programme in Maharashtra from 9 to 15 of this month. The initiative aimed to promote knowledge sharing, strengthen regional cooperation, and expose young participants to India’s innovation, start-up, research and technology ecosystems. It brought together 30 young innovators, technology developers, entrepreneurs and other professionals from BIMSTEC member countries.

Programme Objectives

The exchange was designed to build links among emerging leaders from the Bay of Bengal region. It focused on:

  • Knowledge exchange among young professionals.
  • Exposure to India’s development model.
  • Exploring future collaboration in innovation and technology.
  • Building long-term professional networks across BIMSTEC countries.

Participation and Engagement

The programme included participants from BIMSTEC member states, reflecting the regional nature of the initiative. During the visit, the participants met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He brought into light the state’s strong knowledge, innovation and technology ecosystem and its potential for international partnerships. The interaction also underlined Maharashtra’s role as a hub for start-ups, research and digital growth.

Strategic Significance for BIMSTEC

The exchange programme is part of India’s wider effort to deepen engagement with BIMSTEC countries. It was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 6th BIMSTEC Summit. The initiative supports regionality, innovation and people-to-people contact. It also creates opportunities for cooperation in emerging sectors such as technology development, entrepreneurship and research collaboration.

India’s Regional Outreach

The programme reflects India’s emphasis on youth-led diplomacy and capacity building in the Bay of Bengal region. By connecting young professionals from member countries, it aims to strengthen trust, encourage shared learning and support practical partnerships in areas of future economic and technological growth.
