Defence Forces Veterans’ Day 2026 was observed across India with rallies, wreath laying ceremonies, grievance redressal counters and facilitation help desks to honour ex-servicemen and their contribution to national security. The main celebration was held at Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantt, where veterans from Delhi-NCR gathered for the 10th edition of the annual observance on 14 January 2026.
National Observance
The day was marked at multiple locations, including Rajouri, Amritsar, Lucknow, Ranchi, Guwahati, Pune, Goa and Kochi. State and district-level Sainik Boards also organised events across the country. The observance focused on recognising the service, sacrifice and continued social role of veterans.
Key Messages on Veterans’ Role
The veterans were described as pillars of national consciousness and symbols of courage. Their experience was brought into light as valuable for:
- Guiding youth and Agniveers.
- Supporting disaster management and civil administration.
- Promoting social harmony and patriotism.
- Contributing to education, skill development and innovation.
Welfare and Rehabilitation Measures
The government reiterated its focus on veterans’ welfare through measures such as One Rank One Pension, expansion of the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, telemedicine support and improved pension delivery. Rehabilitation efforts include skill training, resettlement support, priority in public enterprises and encouragement for self-employment. ECHS now serves about 64 lakh beneficiaries.
Legacy of Field Marshal K M Cariappa
Veterans’ Day is observed every year on 14 January to honour Field Marshal K M Cariappa, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, who retired on this day in 1953. The 2026 observance also recalled Operation Pawan and the contribution of Indian peacekeeping troops in Sri Lanka, with renewed emphasis on recognising their service at national memorials.
