Enhanced Capability GNSS Jammers

Enhanced Capability GNSS Jammers

The Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹449 crore contract with Bengaluru-based Accord Software and Systems Private Limited to procure 20 Enhanced Capability Global Navigation Satellite System (ECGNSS) Jammers. These systems are designed to protect Indian naval platforms by neutralising enemy precision-guided munitions and satellite-dependent targeting systems.

Technical Capabilities and Strategic Significance

  • Electronic Warfare (EW): The system employs jamming (emitting radio frequencies to overpower satellite signals) and spoofing (transmitting false navigation data) to mislead enemy receivers without triggering immediate alarms.
  • Operational Scope: The jammers disrupt signals from global networks like GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou, securing naval assets against drones and sea-skimming missiles in the Indian Ocean Region.
  • Indigenisation: Procured under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, the project mandates a minimum of 75% indigenous content, bolstering the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.

IASPOINT Booster Facts

  • Buy (Indian-IDDM): Per the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, this is the highest priority procurement category, ensuring domestic ownership of design and manufacturing.
  • NavIC: India’s independent regional navigation system developed by ISRO, consisting of 7 operational satellites with a 1,500 km range beyond Indian borders.
  • Accord Software: Recognised as the first Indian private firm to develop indigenous NavIC receivers.
  • EW Taxonomy: Electronic warfare is classified into:
    • Electronic Attack: Jamming and spoofing.
    • Electronic Protection: Safeguarding friendly forces.
    • Electronic Warfare Support: Signal sensing and identification.
