‘Fit India School week’ program

In August 2019, the Prime Minister of India launched the nation-wide “Fit India Movement”, which is aimed at encouraging people to induce physical activity and sports in their everyday lives.

Key Points

  • Following the path, the Fit India School Week program was launched in November 2019, to encourage students involved in sports and physical activities.
  • Various activities were conducted and many schools participated in the program. The week saw the participation of more than 15000 schools.

2nd Edition of Fit-India School Week

  • This year, the Union Sports Minister Kiran Rijiju virtually inaugurated the second edition of the Fit India School week.
  • Schools register themselves on the Fit India School week website, and select one week of December to conduct daily activities from the list and celebrate the Fit India school week.
  • Several new activities are planned for this year’s programme including Aerobics, online Quizzes, Debates, Painting, family fitness, and Virtual Challenges among others.

National Sports Day

Fit-India was started on National Sports Day in the year 2019 which celebrated every year on August 29.  The day is observed to celebrate the birth anniversary of legendary Hockey Player Dhyan Chand. He was a Olympics medal winner from India who won gold medals in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936. Major Dhyanchand award which is the highest lifetime achievement award in Sports has also been set up in his honor.

Union Sports Ministry Latest

Recently, Sports Ministry has given approval for setting up 6 Khelo-India Centre of Excellence which will be upgraded with a budget allocation of Rs 67.32 crore for FY 2020-21. These centres will be set up in 6 states- Sikkim, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Daman & Diu, Meghalaya and Assam.
