Women entrepreneurship received a fresh push in Gujarat as the fifth edition of the herSTART programme was launched at Gujarat University, alongside the inauguration of a new research park. The initiative is designed to support women-led startups through incubation, mentorship and market access. The event also marked the naming of the university convention centre as Vidyagauri Nilkanth Sabhapuram, in honour of Vidyagauri Nilkanth, widely regarded as the first Gujarati woman graduate.
Women-Led Development Push
The programme reflects Gujarat’s focus on women-led development and greater participation of women in innovation and enterprise. herSTART is run by the Gujarat University Startup and Entrepreneurship Council. It aims to create a stronger ecosystem for women founders by linking them with guidance, networks and business opportunities.
Startup Ecosystem and Growth
The launch was presented as part of a broader development push around entrepreneurship, research and innovation. India’s startup ecosystem has expanded sharply over the past decade, with the number of startups rising from fewer than 500 to nearly 2,00,000. Women now form part of this growth, and India has also gained a stronger position in global funding for women-led startups.
Focus on Technology and Semiconductors
The event brought into light technology as a key area for nation-building and employment. Special attention was given to the semiconductor sector, where Gujarat is seeking to build new capabilities. Sanand and Dholera are expected to emerge as semiconductor hubs, creating opportunities in chip design, fabrication management, packaging and deep-tech innovation. The recently inaugurated semiconductor plant in Sanand was cited as part of this industrial expansion.
Honours and Programme Highlights
A coffee table book on the achievements of the fourth edition of herSTART was released during the event. Women-led startups associated with the programme were also felicitated, underlining the state’s effort to promote female entrepreneurship and innovation.
