National Leprosy Day was marked with a community outreach programme at Dilli Haat to raise awareness on leprosy, encourage early detection, and reduce stigma. The initiative was organised by the Central Leprosy Division under the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It focused on public education, social inclusion, and timely treatment, with participation from visitors across age groups.
Awareness and Early Detection
A dedicated IEC stall was set up to explain the signs, symptoms, prevention, and treatment of leprosy. The outreach aimed to help people identify early warning signs and seek care without delay. A Self-Examination Mirror activity encouraged participants to observe possible symptoms and understand the importance of prompt diagnosis.
Community Engagement Activities
The programme included a Nukkad Natak on early signs of leprosy and a cultural dance performance by children affected by leprosy. The children, supported by Rotary Club and trained in different skills, brought into light confidence, dignity, and inclusion. An interactive quiz was also held to test awareness and reinforce key messages, with prizes distributed to participants.
Stigma Reduction and Public Pledge
Pamphlets such as 100 Questions & Answers on Leprosy and other IEC material were distributed to support behavioural change and treatment adherence. Visitors took a pledge not to discriminate against persons affected by leprosy, underlining compassion and social acceptance. The programme aligned with national efforts towards a leprosy-free India through early diagnosis, interruption of transmission, and inclusive care.
